A registered nurse has been banned from practice for two years after administering Schedule 4 medicines without a valid medical consultation or prescription, and for continuing to practise while suspended. The findings are confronting, but they’re also an opportunity to learn, reflect, and improve our own practices.
As Spa & Clinic noted, the decision sends “a clear signal that Ahpra and the National Boards are no longer tolerating breaches that have long concerned regulators.” That signal matters for every cosmetic injector in Australia.
According to the tribunal findings, the practitioner administered restricted medicines without authorisation, falsified clinical records, and continued treating patients despite regulatory restrictions. The tribunal determined this behaviour constituted professional misconduct and highlighted the importance of deterrence, both for the practitioner involved and for the wider industry.
Ahpra CEO, Justin Untersteiner, reinforced this shift:
“We will leave no stone unturned to investigate and take action against practitioners who do the wrong thing.”
For years, Australia’s aesthetic industry has operated in an environment where expectations have been tightening, but enforcement has been inconsistent. That era has now ended.
This case reinforces several non-negotiables:
- Patient Safety is paramount.
- Schedule 4 medicines must only be administered following an appropriate medical consultation, and all medications must have a valid prescription in place for the patient.
- Medicines must be supplied to the authorised practitioner, stored, and administered in accordance with state and territory regulations.
- Clinical records must be accurate, complete, and truthful.
- Any Aphra registration conditions and suspensions must be strictly followed.
When a medication is not supplied by the prescribing provider, the chain of custody is compromised, creating uncertainty regarding the medication's origin and accountability. In such instances, practitioners cannot assume clinical responsibility for the safety, integrity, or efficacy of products they did not procure or oversee.
In the event of an adverse clinical reaction, audit, or complaint, clear and accurate records are critical. They provide transparency around the supply, prescribing, and administration of the medication, and protect both patient safety and the practitioner/s involved.
These are not administrative details, but the professional standards expected of every healthcare practitioner. They are fundamental patient safety obligations, and failing to uphold them carries serious consequences.

This Menopause Awareness Month, we sat down with Dr Izzy Sillar to talk about something that affects every woman, but is still so often overlooked: menopause.
For women, menopause isn’t just a hormonal shift. It’s a whole-body transition that affects skin, mood, sleep, energy, and confidence. And for cosmetic nurses, it’s an opportunity to change how women experience this stage of life.
“Perimenopause and menopause… is a clinical diagnosis. We don’t actually rely on blood tests or serum markers… It’s based on the clinical picture.” - Dr Izzy.
That one shift in mindset can change how you consult, treat, and support patients who are 40+ in your aesthetic clinic.
Perimenopause vs. Menopause
“Menopause is diagnosed as being 12 months since their last menstrual period. And perimenopause is less than 12 months, where we’re seeing changes in the menstrual cycle.”
Dr Izzy outlined a typical trajectory:
- Mid–late 30s: testosterone trends down.
- Early 40s: progesterone declines.
- Mid-40s onward: estrogen drops.
As estrogen falls, cycles often space out or go missing. Skin can feel thinner, joints ache (hands, knees, lower back), and patients frequently report the “middle-aged spread.”
“When we lose estrogen… our fibroblasts become dysregulated… This can translate to skin becoming thinner, [and] joints… more sore. It’s really common… to gain weight around the tummy… even when eating well and exercising."

With a passion for aesthetics and a heart for helping others, Tayla’s journey to owning her own business is inspiring - and she's here to tell us why it's anything but superficial.
What began as a dream has turned into a thriving business. "I started working at a skin clinic, and then I decided it was time to do my own thing," Tayla shared.
Tayla’s love for the aesthetic industry has always been strong, but she didn’t initially see it as a career path. “I’ve always loved cosmetics. It’s always been a dream of mine, I just never thought I’d actually do it,” she said.
Tayla started TB Cosmetics a few years ago and never looked back. “I started my own business… and I love it. It’s the best job. I feel so grateful that I can be my own boss and do a job that I love while making people feel good every day,” Tayla said with enthusiasm.
Tayla’s business, TB Cosmetics, specialises in non-surgical cosmetic treatments, with a focus on facial harmony, skin rejuvenation, and fat reduction. TB Cosmetics offers complimentary consultations where Tayla creates personalised treatment plans for her clients.
Tayla’s approach emphasises a natural aesthetic, ensuring her clients not only look their best but also feel confident in their skin. Education is a key part of her business, as she helps patients achieve their skincare goals while understanding the treatments they receive.
One of the most surprising aspects of the industry for Tayla was how much it impacts people emotionally. “When I first started this job, I thought it was quite superficial. Then I started working in the industry and was shocked at how not superficial it is,” she explains. “It’s so nice to make people feel so good about themselves, and it’s not about how they look on the outside - it’s about how they feel on the inside.”

Dr John Delaney, calling in live from Fresh Clinics headquarters in North Sydney, encapsulated the significance of the launch perfectly: "What’s pretty remarkable about this session is it’s all coming to you live from Fresh Clinics.” This marked the first live product demonstration at our HQ.

Clinical Data
Dr David Eccleston, calling in from the UK shared insightful clinical data, emphasising the success behind the development of this product. The large-scale trials demonstrated that Nuceiva® could stand toe-to-toe with market toxin leaders... “87% of subjects achieved the target of at least one improvement at day 30 compared to 83% of subjects in the competitor's group,” Dr Eccleston shared, underlining the product’s efficacy.
Key points also included:
- Immunogenicity: Nuceiva® showed 0 cases of neutralising antibodies, unlike many of its competitors
- Patient Satisfaction: Feedback from patients was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting quicker onset and longer duration of results, coupled with a more natural look
Hands-On Demonstration
Amber Pappas, Director of Medical Affairs at Evolus, treated us to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Evolus Bus in Denver. This innovative setup includes anatomy labs, silicone simulations, and educational events for medical professionals. Amber provided detailed demonstrations of injection techniques with Nucevia®, using their advanced tools and model.
Our very own Dr John Holbrook performed a live demo from Fresh Clinics HQ, explaining the procedure and best practices. He emphasised the importance of delivering toxin where the muscles are, ensuring effective and safe results for patients.

Large tipi tents filled with rattan furniture and outdoor rugs created a relaxed, Bali-like atmosphere where attendees could network and learn from KOLs.
The conference featured two expansive stages, hosting presentations from top-tier injectors, marketing gurus, and motivational speakers. Yemi Penn's keynote on embracing possibilities was truly inspiring, while Dr Steven Liew's comparison of human treatment to AI technology sparked fascinating discussions about the future of cosmetic procedures.
Notable speakers like Dr Bob Khanna provided valuable insights into anatomy-based injection techniques, and sessions from Suzie Hoitink, and Sam Peek equipped delegates with entrepreneurial and professional growth strategies.
Another highlight was the 'Freshchella' Finale, a Coachella-themed event. With festival outfits, live music, and activities, it was an unforgettable evening that blended fun with professional networking.

The Future of Wound Healing in Aesthetics
Imagine a world where skin rejuvenates faster and wounds heal with minimal scarring.
Introducing TR Pro+; a hydrogel formulation that is changing the game in tissue repair. This isn't just another skincare product; it’s a scientifically formulated to accelerate healing, enhance skin protection, and optimise cosmetic and medical procedure outcomes.
Tissue Repair, an Australian company founded in 2015, has been making waves in medical aesthetics with its product TR Pro+. The product’s key active ingredient is beta-glucan, derived from everyday baker’s yeast. Over two decades of rigorous scientific research has gone into its ability to modulate the immune response, therefore promoting faster and healthier skin healing.
The Science: Beta-Glucan
Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide found in the cell walls of yeast, algae, bacteria, and certain grains like oats and barley. The beta-glucan used in TR Pro Plus is extracted from baker’s yeast and formulated into a hydrogel. It's a large molecule beta-glucan that penetrates the skin's epidermis and reaches the dermis, where it activates immune cells known as macrophages.
Macrophages are essentially the body’s guard cells. These immune cells recognise the beta-glucan and become activated, producing growth factors and cytokines which aid in skin healing. Unlike smaller beta-glucans, TR Pro Plus maintains its large structure, ensuring effective activation of the product.

Beta-glucan has shown promise in closing venous leg ulcers, as evidenced by two phase-two FDA studies. These studies highlighted the gel’s ability to close chronic wounds more effectively than placebo treatments. Currently, the product is undergoing phase-three clinical trials in both Australia and the U.S., aiming to treat 600 patients across these regions.

The product has been a lifesaver for patients dealing with conditions like eczema and post-surgical wounds. For instance, in skin cancer excision cases, patients reported accelerated healing with minimal inflammation when TR Pro+ was applied immediately post-procedure.

By holding our conference at the Crystalbrook Byron, we're enhancing the experience for our attendees with the stunning scenery of the rainforest, which serves as a reminder of the significance of learning and education in the outdoors.
Sip Sustainably
With sustainability at the forefront of the conference, you'll notice our lanyards aren't made of plastic, and the venue is covered in wood and green. In our efforts to reduce waste, we’ve also swapped out plastic straws for eco-friendly paper ones and ditched single-use plastic bottles for our glass hydration stations. We have also opted for paperless QR code tickets and the entire programme is at the touch of a button via The Fresh Life app.
We’ve also set up dedicated recycling bins and areas throughout the venue, making it easy for everyone to dispose of waste responsibly. These initiatives help ensure that we leave Byron Bay as pristine as we found it.

All our food is ethically and sustainably sourced from local suppliers.
